​About West Virginia

West Virginia, the Mountain State, is located in the Appalachian region of the United States and bordered by the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky and Virginia. The State was created by Presidential proclamation effective on June 20, 1863, after its separation from Virginia was approved by the people of West Virginia and an Act of Congress. It is the forty-first largest state with 24,077 square miles and the thirty-eighth most populous state in the country with 1.81 million residents. West Virginia has long been admired for its physical beauty, with many wild rivers and scenic mountains. The ancient geological events that created West Virginia's mountains also endowed it with extensive deposits of high quality coal, natural gas, petroleum, limestone, salt, and sand. The independent spirit of its citizens is exemplified in the State's motto: "Montani semper liberi!" (Mountaineers are always free!).

West Virginia’s economy is fueled by a long tradition of mining and energy production, as well as related industries, such as chemicals, steel, cement, and glass production. Also, the State’s large, picturesque land area of forested acres and raging waters located within 500 miles of half of the United States population, and a third of Canada's, lends itself to desirable, affordable and easily accessible tourist destinations.
